First Review for the new 2-CD Liza set, "The COMPLETE A&M RECORDINGS"

TIME OUT New York, November 27th, 2008:
Liza Minnelli ~ The Complete A&M Recordings (Collector’s Choice)Let’s face facts: In the four decades since the four LPs collected here were originally released, Liza Minnelli has done a fair amount of damage to her reputation as one of Broadway’s most formidable babies. Still, it’s a testament to her talent—not to mention her force of will—that despite tabloid headlines, Minnelli remains one of America’s most beloved entertainers. With its many examples of her appealing sass and indomitable charm, The Complete A&M Recordings demonstrates why. As Scott Schechter writes in a thoughtful liner-notes essay, these records—1968’s Liza Minnelli, 1969’s Come Saturday Morning, 1970’s New Feelin’ and 1972’s Live at the Olympia in Paris, plus a handful of singles and outtakes—captured the singer in an in-between phase, after she’d made a splash on the Great White Way but before she’d conquered the rest of showbiz. The music is similarly transitional, with Beatles ballads and Randy Newman numbers rubbing up against show tunes and standards. In Minnelli’s hands, a song is a story no matter where it came from, and her bold performances milk the material for all it’s worth (and occasionally a bit more—see Gordon Lightfoot’s “Wherefore and Why”). Trouble was on the way, but here pure pizzazz held it at bay.

SCOTT SCHECHTER BIO
Scott Schechter has devoted over a quarter of a century to researching the lives and careers of both Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli, earning his status as the premier Garland-Minnelli authority.
His research and devotion have led to his working with many of the companies that continue to release Garland-Minnelli material, including Capitol Records and Pioneer Entertainment/Classic World Productions, Inc. His expertise as a Garland-Minnelli historian has been acknowledged by his television and radio appearances; as a source in P.R. functions; and in dealing with media, including NY Post columnist Liz Smith.
Mr. Schechter is perhaps proudest of his role as archivist, which has led to the uncovering and releasing of rare or lost material.
Television programs on which Mr. Schechter has consulted and/or appeared as a Judy Garland or Liza Minnelli authority have included NBC's Dateline, ABC’s The View, 20/20, Good Morning, America, AMC’s Behind The Screen, A&E's Biography series, and E! Entertainment Television’s True Hollywood Story 2-hour special on Garland’s life and career -- which was critically acclaimed by TV Guide and USA Today. For this episode, which was one of the 15 highest-rated True Hollywood Story shows of that series' first 5 year and 200 episode run, Schechter served as Consulting Producer. The program and Schechter won a Gracie Award, and also a Prism Award nomination for best TV documentary. Schechter also contributed to E!'s 2 hour E! True Hollywood Story of the Year, 2002 on Minnelli, for which she videotaped a wraparound, giving the special her blessing. In addition, he contributed to A&E's 2 hour June 2004 Biography: Liza Minnelli, with which the star was involved, as well. Schechter also consulted on the 2006 Minnelli 2-hour Inside the Actor’s Studio.
For his marketing and P.R. efforts, Mr. Schechter has obtained the highest profile exposure for his clients. He has utilized media such as Rolling Stone magazine, USA Today, Fox News Channel, ABC Network, E! Entertainment, and TV Guide.
In 1998, Mr. Schechter co-produced what many consider the definitive audio overview of Garland’s career: the 4-CD box set entitled Judy, from 32 Records. The project spans the entire 40 years of her recorded legacy, from her earliest known recordings in 1929 at age 7, to one of her final appearances in 1969, just before her passing. Along with compiling the material for the compact discs from his archives of Garland’s work, he performed similar duties for the set’s 32-minute video and its 100-page book. This lavish set received rave reviews from the New York Times, People, USA Today, Entertainment Weekly, and the NY Post, which concluded its review by saying, “…music historian Scott Schechter’s essay is an excellent read and will earn him a nomination for the prestigious Grammy Award for best liner notes.”
Mr. Schechter’s liner notes on other Garland-Minnelli projects have been mentioned in USA Today, Billboard and the Los Angeles Times.
As a writer, his words on Garland and family have appeared in the Advocate, Show Music magazine, and three editorials printed in the New York Times (1994, 1998 and 2001).
In 2000, Mr. Schechter was instrumental in getting Garland's historic, Grammy Award winning Album Of The Year Judy at Carnegie Hall released complete and uncut – for the first time ever -- exactly as it happened on the night of April 23, 1961, as a deluxe 24-Karat Gold audiophile set.
Schechter’s other CD projects include Capitol Records’ Judy at Carnegie Hall: Fortieth Anniversary Edition, and that label’s 2-CD set of material he produced and compiled called Classic Judy Garland -- The Capitol Years (1955-1965); Collectables Records CDs (under license from Capitol) Miss Show Business/Judy, and Judy: That’s Entertainment!/I Could Go On Singing; S&P Records’ CD (under license from Capitol) : Judy in Love/Alone; Varese Saraband’s Engelebert Humperdinck: You Belong To My Heart; Hip-o Records / Universal Music’s Liza Minnelli: Ultimate Collection (which Miss Minnelli liked so much she mentioned it in her most recent concert souvenir program), and that label’s definitive audio compilation he produced and compiled of Garland’s TV series The Judy Garland Show: The Show That Got Away, which included legendary duets, plus solos and rare outtakes. For DRG Records/Koch Entertainment, he has produced and written the liner notes for the 2 CD set Liza Minnelli: The Complete Capitol Collection (released in July 2006, and containing all of Liza's 1963-1966 studio recordings for Capitol), the CD debut of Judy Garland: The Letter (released in March 2007), and the CD debut of Judy Garland at the Grove (released in March 2008, honoring the 50th Anniversary of the album's 1958 recording date) -- all licensed through Capitol Records. As such, aside from a few 1960s LP compilations, Schechter is responsible for the restoration and/or release of Garland's entire Capitol catalog that was not available on CD.
Mr. Schechter recently completed work on the project of which (along with the Judy box and the Carnegie reissues) he is proudest -- getting Garland’s long-lost 1963-64 TV series released to the public, in their entirety, for the first time. The Judy Garland Show DVDs have been an astounding success for Pioneer Entertainment and Classic World Productions. As well as being instrumental in getting the project green lighted by both companies, he has served as a consultant on the creative end (compiling the acclaimed Just Judy DVD of solo moments), and with the products marketing and P.R. -- which included crafting the advertising slogan The Show That Got Away. The 1999 holiday season release of The Judy Garland Show Collection DVD box set was honored with the Best Overall Presentation Award (non-theatrical) by the Video Software Dealers Association (VSDA). The latest DVDs from “the series of the series” include: The Judy Garland Show - Just Judy, The Judy Garland Show: Legends, and Judy Garland: Songs for America, from which the proceeds benefit the American Red Cross. Mr. Schechter conceived and compiled this project -- and supplied liner notes and consulting on the final five individual Judy Garland Show DVDs that were released from January through May 2006.
In June 2002, his book on Garland was published by Cooper Square Press / Rowman-Littlefield Publishing, to coincide with the icon’s 80th Birthday: Judy Garland: The Day-by-Day Chronicle of a Legend presents the world’s first and only chronicle of her life, with an emphasis on her career and legacy. Featured on the CBS-TV series The Late, Late, Late Show with Craig Kilborn, and in Entertainment Weekly magazine, the reviews for Judy Garland: The Day-by-Day Chronicle of a Legend have been raves. Liz Smith called the book “impressive … a paean to Garland's professionalism and talents. It is beautifully produced and sure to thrill Judy's evergreen fans.” The LA Times stated, “…Scott Schechter's book proves how hard she (Garland) worked to overcome obstacles” ... Exhaustively researched.” Publisher’s Weekly noted, “…it is sure to have enormous appeal as a reference tome and have multiple uses for trivia buffs…,” and Robert Osborne of the Hollywood Reporter devoted his entire column to the book, raving “almost overwhelming in its detail, Schechter's research is as thorough as a Nobel scientist...It's the most complete retrospective yet published on a celebrity.” While the hardcover version remains in print, the soft cover edition was released in November 2006 by Taylor Trade Publishing.
Mr. Schechter's latest book was published in November 2004 by Citadel Press / Kensington Publishing Corp: The Liza Minnelli Scrapbook is a full-color book containing well over 200 rare images, and is the first time a book has focused exclusively on Minnelli's career, not her personal life. The book has been critically acclaimed and featured in Liz Smith’s column, in the Hollywood Reporter, Page Six in the NY Post, and on Playbill online. Schechter and the book were also included on the NBC network TV series Dateline NBC. The book has been sold alongside Liza’s CDs and DVDs at various concerts, such as her Las Vegas engagements. Liza's own musical arranger Billy Stritch supplied the book's foreword, and Minnelli herself praised it as “the only official one, the only one that counts.” (Minnelli allowed Schechter to announce her return to films with her appearance in The OH in Ohio at his book party for Scrapbook, resulting in his appearance on Page Six in the NY Post.)
In June 2005, Schechter made his second appearance at the annual Judy Garland Festival in her hometown of Grand Rapids, Minnesota, where he became the first and only Garland-Minnelli authority to receive the Judy Garland Museum’s Achievement Award for all he has done to restore and release Judy Garland's body of work.
Schechter’s latest project is the November 25th, 2008 release of the 2-CD set Liza Minnelli: The COMPLETE A&M RECORDINGS (Collector’s Choice Music, licensed through Universal Music, owners of the A&M catalog). This is the CD debut of Liza’s entire A&M output – including the stereo debut of her one single for the label (“Frank Mills”), and seven never-before-heard outtakes. Schechter produced, conceived, compiled, supervised the mastering in 24-bit, and wrote the liners for this release. On its street date, the set appeared on the CBS Early Show.
In March 2006, on Liza Minnelli's 60th Birthday, Schechter launched her official U.S. website, at the icon's request. OfficialLizaMinnelli.com features all the latest news on Liza's legendary career, as well as personal messages from the superstar. The site has been featured in many media outlets, including Entertainment Tonight.
Schechter is honored to be the managing director of Liza Minnelli's official site, as he continues to work on preserving and presenting the vast catalogs of Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli.

The Liza Minnelli Scrapbook by Scott Schechter Perfect for any fan, The Liza Minnelli Scrapbook is just that – a scrapbook of an almost five-decade career. With a fond foreword by Billy Stricth, this book chronicles Liza’s life by decade. There are brief overviews of each ten-year span, and then details and at least a brief synopsis on every movie, television show, Broadway show, and recording Liza has ever done. Furthermore, as if that was not enough, there are billions of pictures – pictures with other celebrity friends, cameos from various television and movie stints, covers of playbills and recordings, etc. The book is so indubitably complete in its coverage of Liza’s career that there is even a picture of Liza with Kermit the Frog from her episode on “The Muppet Show!” This is an incredible, cohesive, and all-inclusive record of Ms. Minnelli and is a must have for any fan because of its comprehensive coverage and plethora of pictures. - Seth Bisen-Hersh http://www.nytheatre.com/nytheatre/bookshop.htm
From GENRE magazine, January-February 2005 issue, "The Feed" Column : "audio / film / PAGES," Editor (and reviews by) Michael Liebermann : "The Liza Minnelli Scrapbook" Scott Schechter, Kensington, Biography, 242 pages, $22 "If you're looking for objective criticism of Liza Minnelli's storied career in music, film and theater, or an expose of her latest missteps in love, then keep on browsing. But if you fancy a stroll down gay memory lane -- from growing up Garland through 'Cabaret'to the oft-forgotten 1980 TV spectacular 'Goldie and Liza : Together' -- you can't do much better than this true fan's scrapbook." ****
From OUT magazine, January 2005 issue; "OutFront" Reviews : "What's New and Hot" : "ETC" (Page 27) : "A must-have for Liza fans, Scott Schechter brings us 'The Liza Minnelli Scrapbook' (Citadel, $21.95), a vibrant volume about her career, with over 200 rare and never-before-seen photographs." ****
From BUZZ Magazine, November 25 - December 8, 2004 (Issue # 185) Liza Minnelli Scrapbook BY BILL BISS, Buzz Columnist Scott Schechter, award winning journalist, author and producer has just released the perfect red carnation for the legendary Liza Minnelli (I say "red carnation" as that is her favorite flower). The Liza Minnelli Scrapbooks is a complete time capsule of her work on stage, in the recording studio, and in motion pictures and television. This is a beautiful tribute to her talent, and as Liza has said before, "I think the thing I'd like to do most in my life is to work and work hard." The proof is in these pages and the joy of doing a job well done is known in Liza's work countless times over. Scott and I got together to celebrate his new work honoring Liza Minnelli. Q : What was the most difficult part of putting The Liza Minnelli Scrapbook together? A : Knowing, unfortunately, that the book couldn't be an encyclopedia. We wound up with so much more than my initial contract called for -- just honing it down, so it could be lifted by human hands. Q: Well, that always leaves room for Vol. 2. A: (laughter) Hey, works for me! Q: As you were putting this book together, was there something new you discovered in the process about her career? A: There have been many things. There is so much great information in here about everything Liza has done and every medium that she has worked in. For example, all the films that she didn't do. One was The Carmen Miranda Story, which I just find so funny, and A Great Wind Cometh. We actually have the ad when Cannon Films jumped the gun, and announced that Liza was going to be starring in their film. The ad has Liza coming down in her parachute with these big eyelashes. Those types of things are a big thrill for me to share. Q : Billy Stritch (Liza's friend and talented musician) really put some good thoughts into his forward for your book. A: It was just so perfect. He has been a great part of this project for me. I thought it really captured his love of the lady and certainly, his passion for her work. Q : Have you had the opportunity to present Liza with a final copy? A: Actually, Liza hasn't seen the book -- believe it or not. We're trying to set a time when I can sit down and go over it with her. But Fox called her and moved up her filming date for Arrested Development, so she had to fly out there. I was lucky enough to show her the first 20 pages of proofs we had in July, and she was so kind. There is one photo in the book of Vincente (her dad), which I guess she had never seen before. She was so excited by it. She said, "You know, I do look more like my dad!" Q : Your book presents her in such a positive light. Then again, how could you not. A : She has been very appreciative of all the things that I have done on her and her mom. She told me she completely trusts me with her mom's work and her work. That's so important to me. Q: That's priceless. A: Exactly. It's something that I value. Billy was looking over the book last night and saying, "Oh my gosh -- wait till she sees this photo -- and this!" I'm very happy to be able to present an antidote to the trials and tribulations of celebrity. The things that Liza has been facing are things, unfortunately, that any one who is a celebrity can be a target of. It's so important to remind the media and the public of why we love Liza. It's because of her talent. So, this book could not be coming out at a better time. Q : I really like the way you presented her career in the form of a Broadway play, with each section divided into acts with intermissions, overtures, exit music, etc. A: I thought it should flow with all the components that would make a smash musical, like the ones that Liza has done. I'm so grateful that Citadel Press and Kensington Publications have been so supportive of this book. One of the higher up's that make the decisions about which books get published was sort of on the fence about the book. It turned out he was in Florida in February of 2003 at the same time Liza was doing a concert in Florida. So, he decided to go to the concert and the next day, he approved my book. I am so glad there is finally a book that just focuses on her magnificent career. Every other book that has ever come out has always dwelt on her personal life and not her professional life. We just decided that it was time. One of Liza's associates and I were talking about it some months back and he said, "I think we were just waiting for you to do it, Scott!" Q: If someone had absolutely no idea of who Liza Minnelli was, how would you describe this book? A: It's the best way to see why millions of people all over the world love this lady and why you should come on board. I have such great hope. Let's face it, the book is a walking commercial for Liza's professional output. The biggest thrill in the world for me would be for someone to say, "Oh, I don't really know that much about her, I keep reading about her in the paper, so I decided to get your book and I looked at it. Now, I'm going out and buying CDs and DVDs and videos of her work." That would be the biggest compliment. Q : Scott, thanks so much. I'll make sure my friends find The Liza Minnelli Scrapbook under their tree this Christmas. A: Thank you, Bill. ****

News, Mon, 15 Nov 2004 4:13 PM PST 'SCRAPBOOK' DELIVERS THE GOODS (Headline) By Robert Osborne NEW YORK Liza Minnelli has certainly had her share of publicized woes of late, but something's on the horizon that should cheer her considerably. Scott Schechter has compiled a magnificent book on the one aspect of L. M. that always seems to get short shrift or is altogether ignored these days, i. e.,her years of delivering the goods in front of cameras and on stages throughout the world. That work has won her, to date, an Oscar (1972), three Tonys (1965, '74, '78), an Emmy (1973), a Grammy (1989), two Golden Globes (1973, '86) and an ever-loyal fan base, something Schechter covers in monumental detail in "The Liza Minnelli Scrapbook," in bookstores this month via Citadel Press, with a foreword by Billy Stritch. No stone is left unturned in looking at the career of Minnelli and, for a refreshing change, no stone is hurled at her, either; here, it's strictly Liza's professional life and accomplishments that the author is emphasizing. And nothing goes unrecorded, be it a TV "Match Game" appearance on NBC in 1967, a 1987 concert in Stockholm, Sweden, or, this year, singing "Oscar" and "God Bless the Child" at a private party at the Ars Nova Theatre in New York. Besides being a dandy reference guide for anyone hunting for a Minnelli fact,"Scrapbook" also includes plenty of interesting info on Minnelli projects that came close to happening but didn't. She was announced, for instance, in 1975, and again in '77 and '79, to star in the film version of "Chicago," playing Velma to Goldie Hawn s Roxie Hart (with, at one point, Allan Carr producing, Frank Sinatra playing the lawyer, Nancy Walker as the prison matron and Carol Channing and Ann Miller as competing newspaper reporters); later, in 1992, it was rescheduled but with a difference: Lewis Gilbert was to direct, with Liza switched to the role of Roxie and Goldie as Velma. We all know how that turned out. In 1982, Liza tested for what was to be an "Evita" directed by Ken Russell; she sang "Don't Cry for Me, Argentina," causing Russell to publicly comment, "We had found our Evita"; the entire venture, however, was KO'd until it was finally made 14 years later with a different leading lady. Schechter also lists dozens of other projects that almost happened ("Sunset Boulevard," "The Carmen Miranda Story") and, carrying out the "scrapbook" motif, there are miscellaneous color photographs, candids and reproductions of Playbill and album covers and Liza-related ads. One thing comes through loud and clear: The lady may like to play, but she has also worked. ****
The NY POST -- "PAGE SIX" -- Sunday, November 14th, 2004 : HITS THE SPOT : IT'S not all bad news about Liza Minnelli, who was just hit with a lawsuit by her former chauffeur. At the book party for Scott Schechter's "Liza Minnelli Scrapbook" tribute tome, the author announced Minnelli's first theatrical movie since "Stepping Out" in 1991. Liza will play an offbeat self-help seminar leader who helps Parker Posey on her quest to find her G-spot, in "The Oh in Ohio." It co-stars Danny DeVito and Mischa Barton. ****
The SECOND Review of "The Liza Minnelli Scrapbook" this one by Phill Hall of Boston's EDGE and also to appear in the NY RESIDENT paper in a few weeks : "The Liza Minnelli Scrapbook" by Scott Schechter Grade: A+ by Phil Hall EDGE Literature Critic Monday Nov 1, 2004 Just from the title alone, “The Liza Minnelli Scrapbook” seems predestined to find a place on the coffee table of many gay homes. But forget the stereotypical gay worship of this show biz icon and zoom in on the rich contents. Scott Schechter’s extraordinary tribute to Liza with a “Z” is brilliantly researched, lavishly illustrated and endlessly entertaining. It is impossible to come away from this book without possessing a deeper love and respect for Minnelli. Schechter breaks down Minnelli’s career in a neat manner: a decade-by-decade career-based mini-biography (all scandals are removed from print), followed by a chronological appreciation of Minnelli’s theater, film, television, recording and concert careers. Schechter uncovers a wealth of long-forgotten facts and photographs which will delight Minnelli’s fans: Minnelli dancing on stage with then-unknown Elliott Gould in a touring company of “The Fantasticks,” her simultaneous Time and Newsweek covers for “Cabaret” (and you thought Bruce Springsteen was the only entertainer to accomplish that?) The book is also rich with Minnelli trivia, including unlikely appearances such as a concert for the inmates of a Chicago jail (two months after she won the “Cabaret” Oscar). There is also an unexpectedly large amount of little-known data on projects which Minnelli either turned down (including the role of Daisy in “The Great Gatsby” opposite Robert Redford) or which fell apart before production began (including the film version of “Evita” under Ken Russell’s direction). Schechter is uncommonly generous to Minnelli, to the point of presenting the most glamorous and flattering photographs available; later-life tabloid photographs which show Minnelli’s problems with weight control are conspicuously absent. Yes, “The Liza Minnelli Scrapbook” is a love letter to the great star. And honestly, what’s wrong with a love letter to someone who truly earned the love of her fans? Citadel Press, $21.95, 228 pages ****
The FIRST REVIEW for "The Liza Minnelli Scrapbook" LIZ SMITH : NY Post -- Friday, November 5th, 2004 "DEDICATED TO Liza Minnelli's artistry." That's what it says on page one of Scott Schechter's "The Liza Minnelli Scrapbook" (Citadel Press). This is a glossy valentine to the great star, concentrating on her long, award-laden stage, screen and recording career. The sensation of her "private" life is not emphasized. Tons of previously unseen photos and plenty of Minnelli minutiae. (Her first reviews, even as an awkward teen, are a thrill to read; she had style from the start!) Flip through this and be reminded that Liza is an artist, one whose commitment to her audience never wavers. ****

Author Scott Schechter is noted as the world’s foremost authority on Liza Minnelli, and presents the entirety of the legend’s life and artistry. From her first time on screen in her mother Judy Garland’s 1949 MGM musical "In The Good OId Summertime," to Minnelli’s triumph on the 2004 Emmy-winning Best Comedy "Arrested Development," it’s all here. THE LIZA MINNELLI SCRAPBOOK is presented like one of Liza’s smash Broadway musicals, including an Overture (the Introduction); Act One (Overviews / Chapters on each decade of Liza’s life to the present); Intermission (Chapters on “The Liza Look,” and “Everybody Loves a Winner,” focusing on Minnelli’s major awards); Act Two (More detailed Chapters on the star’s output in each media -- Broadway, Movies, TV, Records, and Concerts); and even Exit Music (a Chapter on collecting Liza’s work on DVD and CD, and the online sites devoted to her). Along with Schechter’s powerful prose on Minnelli’s professional output, THE LIZA MINNELLI SCRAPBOOK also features a staggering amount of mostly never-before-published art -- well over 200 photos -- and the majority of the photographs are in glorious color (approximately 136 color photos of Liza, and 79 B/W images). Another special feature is the book’s Foreword, which has been written for THE LIZA MINNELLI SCRAPBOOK by Minnelli’s musical mainstay : her arranger, accompanist, collaborator, and confidant, Billy Stitch. Stritch has headlined in every famed nightspot throughout the country. Recently he has served as Minnelli's musical director on her 2004 U.S. tour. THE LIZA MINNELLI SCRAPBOOK is by an award-winning author, producer and historian, who has devoted thirty years to researching the careers of Minnelli and her mother Judy Garland, earning his status as the premiere Minnelli-Garland historian. TV shows Schechter has produced or consulted on include A&E’s recent 2-hour "Biography" on Liza, and the similar 2002 "E! True Hollywood Story." The many CDs he has produced, compiled and written liner notes for include "Liza Minnelli : Ultimate Collection" -- which the star enjoyed so much she raved about it in her latest concert souvenir program -- along with "Judy at Carnegie Hall : Fortieth Anniversary Edition" and "The Judy Garland Show : The Show That Got Away." DVDs of Garland’s entire 1963-64 TV series were the result of Schechter’s efforts beginning back in 1998, including conception of the 2001 "Songs For America" disc benefiting the American Red Cross immediately after 9-11. The author’s previous book "Judy Garland : The Day-By-Day Chronicle of a Legend” was acclaimed by the LA Times, Liz Smith, and the Hollywood Reporter which stated “It’s the most complete retrospective yet published on a celebrity ... Schechter’s research is as thorough as a Nobel scientist.” "What good is sitting all alone in your room -- except when you can have this book as a companion! It provides a wonderfully comprehensive tribute to a great performer and a beguiling personality." -- Liza’s Cabaret costar / leading man, Michael York. * THE LIZA MINNELLI SCRAPBOOK has already been featured in Liz Smith, Playbill Online, and the author appeared on NBC'S prime-time news magazine "Dateline." If you love Liza like I do, it is a must to have." -- Margaret Whiting Acclaimed singer, “It Might As Well Be Spring,” “Moonlight In Vermont” "Liza’s life in the gossip columns and tabloids has tended to woefully and unfairly overshadow the Oscar, the Tony, the Emmy and all the work she’s done to earn such lofty accolades. She is, without question, one of the most electric performers of our time. In this superb and detailed scrapbook of the Minnelli career, Scott Schechter reemphasizes all those performances in loving detail. There are enough facts, tidbits and surprises, that even the most devoted fan of the indefatigable Liza will come away with an even deeper respect for the lady and the work she’s done. When one is as talented as Liza, such an accolade seems not only justified but indispensable and long overdue. A star could not ask for a better tribute." --Robert Osborne columnist-critic for The Hollywood Reporter and host of the Turner Classic Movies television network ****

My Bio
SCOTT SCHECHTER BIOGRAPHY Scott Schechter has devoted over a quarter of a century to researching the lives and careers of Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli, earning his status as the premier Garland-Minnelli authority. His research and devotion have led to his working with many of the companies that continue to release Garland-Minnelli material, including Capitol Records and Pioneer Entertainment / Classic World Productions, Inc. His expertise as a Garland-Minnelli historian has been acknowledged on his TV and Radio appearances; as a source in PR functions; and in dealing with media such as Liz Smith, et Al. Mr. Schechter is perhaps proudest of his role as archivist, which has led to the uncovering and releasing of rare or lost material. TV shows that Mr. Schechter has consulted on as a Judy Garland or Liza Minnelli authority have included ABC’s “20/20,” “Good Morning, America,” AMC’s “Behind The Screen,” NBC's "Dateline," and A&E's "Biography" series. E! Entertainment Television’s recent “True Hollywood Story” 2-Hour special on Garland’s life and career was critically acclaimed by TV Guide and USA Today, etc.; For this episode -- which was one of the 15 highest-rated "THS" shows of that series' 5-year and 200-episode run -- Schechter served as Consulting Producer. The program was honored with a GRACIE AWARD, and was nominated for a PRISM AWARD, for best TV documentary. For his marketing and PR efforts, Mr. Schechter has obtained the highest profile exposure for his clients. Media such as Rolling Stone magazine, USA Today, Fox News Channel, ABC Network, E! Entertainment, and TV Guide have been utilized. In 1998, Mr. Schechter co-produced what is considered the definitive audio overview of Garland’s career : the 4-CD box set “Judy” from 32 Records, which spans the entire 40 years of her recorded legacy, from her earliest known recordings in 1929 at age 7, to one of her final appearances in 1969, shortly before her passing. Along with compiling the material for the compact discs from his archives of Garland’s work, he performed similar duties for the set’s 32-minute video, and its 100-page book. This lavish set received rave reviews from the New York Times, People, USA Today, Entertainment Weekly, and the NY Post, which concluded its review by saying “music historian Scott Schechter’s essay is an excellent read and will earn him a nomination for the prestigious Grammy Award for best liner notes.” Mr. Schechter’s liner notes on other Garland-Minnelli projects have been mentioned in USA Today, Billboard, and the Los Angeles Times. As a writer, his words on Garland and family have appeared in the Advocate, Show Music magazine, and three editorials printed in the New York Times (1994, 1998 and 2001). In 2000, Mr. Schechter was instrumental in getting Garland’s historic, Grammy-winning Album Of The Year “Judy at Carnegie Hall” released complete and uncut, exactly as it happened that night, in its proper running order -- for the first time ever -- and as a deluxe 24-Karat Gold audiophile set. Schechter’s recent CD projects include Capitol Records’ “Judy at Carnegie Hall : Fortieth Anniversary Edition” and that label’s new 2-CD set of material he produced and compiled, called “Classic Judy Garland -- The Capitol Years (1955-1965)”; Collectables Records’ “twofer” CDs (under license from Capitol) : “Miss Show Business / Judy” and “Judy : That’s Entertainment! / I Could Go On Singing”; S&P Records’ “twofer” CD (under license from Capitol) : “Judy in Love / Alone”; Varese Saraband’s “Engelebert Humperdinck : You Belong To My Heart”; Hip-o Records / Universal Music’s “Liza Minnelli : Ultimate Collection" -- which Miss Minnelli liked so much she mentioned it in her new concert souvenir program -- and that label’s definitive audio compilation he produced and compiled of Garland’s TV series : “The Judy Garland Show : The Show That Got Away" includes legendary duets, plus solos and rare outtakes. Mr. Schechter recently completed work on the project which (along with the “Judy” box and the Carnegie reissues) he is proudest of : getting Garland’s long-lost 1963-64 TV series released to the public in their entirety for the first time. “The Judy Garland Show” DVDs have been an astounding success for Pioneer Entertainment and Classic World Productions. As well as being instrumental in getting the project green lighted by both companies, he has served as a consultant on the creative end (compiling the acclaimed “Just Judy” DVD of solo moments) and with the product’s marketing and PR -- which included crafting the advertising slogan : “The Show That Got Away.” The project’s 1999 Holiday Season “Judy Garland Show Collection” DVD box set was honored with the Best Overall Presentation Award (non-theatrical) by the Video Software Dealer’s Association (VSDA). The latest DVDs from “the series of the series” include : “The Judy Garland Show - Just Judy,” June 2002’s “The Judy Garland Show : Legends,” and "Judy Garland : Songs for America,” in which all the proceeds will benefit the American Red Cross. Mr. Schechter conceived and compiled this project. In June 2002, his book on Garland was published by Cooper Square Press to coincide with the icon’s 80th Birthday; JUDY GARLAND : THE DAY-BY-DAY CHRONICLE OF A LEGEND presents the entirety of her life, with an emphasis on her career and legacy. The reviews for JUDY GARLAND : THE DAY-BY-DAY CHRONICLE OF A LEGEND have been raves : LIZ SMITH called the book “an impressive mass of minutia: a paean to Garland's professionalism and talents. It is beautifully produced and sure to thrill Judy's evergreen fans.” The LA TIMES stated “Scott Schechter's book proves how hard she worked to overcome obstacles ... Exhaustively researched.” PUBLISHER’S WEEKLY noted “it is sure to have enormous appeal as a reference tome and have multiple uses for trivia buffs,” and Robert Osborne of the HOLLYWOOD REPORTER devoted his entire column to the book, raving “almost overwhelming in its detail, Schechter's research is as thorough as a Nobel scientist ... It's the most complete retrospective yet published on a celebrity.” Mr. Schechter's latest book will be published in November 2004 by Citadel Press / Kensington Publishing Corp : THE LIZA MINNELLI SCRAPBOOK will be a full-color book containing well over 100 rare pieces of art, and will be the first time a book has focused exclusively on Minnelli's career, not her personal life. The book has already been featured in Liz Smith, Playbill online, and Schechter and the book were just included on the NBC network TV series DATELINE NBC. (March 2004)
REVIEWS of My Book "JUDY GARLAND : THE DAY-BY-DAY CHRONICLE OF A LEGEND"
More REVIEWS for Schechter's book on Garland : "If you love the legend that is Garland, run to get Scott Schechter's new book, 'Judy Garland: The Day-By-Day Chronicle of a Legend' (Cooper Square Press). This is an impressive mass of minutia: a paean to Garland's professionalism and talents. It is beautifully produced and sure to thrill Judy's evergreen fans" -- Liz Smith "For several years, Schechter has produced, written, consulted on and/or spearheaded numerous J.G.-related media projects, including the CD 'Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall: 40th Anniversary Edition' and the DVD releases of Judy's 1963-64 CBS series. His new book is the capper. Almost overwhelming in its detail, Schechter's research is as thorough as a Nobel scientist ... It's the most complete retrospective yet published on a celebrity and, in this instance, absolutely mesmerizing." -- Robert Osborne, The Hollywood Reporter "Scott Schechter's book not only chronicles her difficult life, but also proves how hard she worked to overcome obstacles" -- Susan King, LA TIMES "Staggeringly thorough" -- PLAYBILL, National Edition "Exhaustively researched (and lushly illustrated) history of the diva's life" -- the ADVOCATE "To read past biographies and old newspaper reports, one might wonder how she ever got through even one song without collapsing, and yet the evidence of long, hard work is there, as Scott Schechter's book illustrates to a fault ... Garland was a tireless trouper of enormous energy and determination (and believe it or not responsibility) from the age of two, and often more than made up for absences due to emotional and physical illness by sheer will, professionalism and talent ... (The book) represents an incredible archival work by the author, and offers a lot of fascinating nuggets along the way." -- FRONTIERS "Everything (and we do mean everything) that you ever wanted to know about Judy Garland can be found in Scott Schechter's extraordinary "Judy Garland : The Day-by-Day Chronicle of a Legend." Perhaps the most comprehensive ever published ... Rarely has a biographical text been so thoroughly and extensively researched ... A stunning literary monument. Anyone who loves Judy Garland will treasure this new classic." -- New York RESIDENT "This is one great coffee table book, chock-full of unseen photos. But there is much more ... Here we connect all the dots by date. Fascinating ... This chronicle will sit on top of the book stack for a long time, for it is so packed with minutiae that it pins down not only Garland, but the life of a celebrity. The text painstakingly records the lifetime career of an artist ... the book is both heavy and heady, packed with details ... (the author) insinuates himself into the text only when it might be necessary to clarify a point. This book cuts to the chase -- only the facts, ma'am ... Physically, this book is a delight. The photos (personal and formal) are beautifully reproduced; the text is user friendly; the index profuse. Book lovers, Garland fans or not, will appreciate the publishing job." -- THE BOTTOM LINE magazine "Schechter's fascinating view of this legendary star and survivor is gloriously illustrated with some 80 high quality photographs and thoughtfully concluded with two indexes, one by song title and another by subject matter. This is a volume definitely destined for coffee tables." — Stonewall News Northwest "An unparalleled treasure trove of rare Garland material." — PM Magazine "Schechter includes a generous sampling of reviews for films, albums and live appearances, and dutifully notes current availability for fans. ...it is sure to have enormous appeal as a reference tome and have multiple uses for trivia buffs. " — Publishers Weekly "Garland's career spanned vaudeville, film, radio and TV, so a chronicle of her life is a chronicle of popular entertainment in the 20th century. To say that Schechter worships Garland is an understatement, but his account of her life consists primarily of objective facts, which gain emotional force from the massive accumulation of triumphs and defeats both big and small." — Charleston Post and Courier "This book is a real collector's item. Schechter has gone out of his way to shift public perception from what most people 'thought they knew about her' to what they really should know about her. The magnitude of his research is unprecedented." — Seattle Gay News "A must-have for the die-hards." -- Genre magazine "It is a strange and remarkable thing to hold in one's hands a document that catalogs the virtually daily existence of someone's entire life, from birth to death - especially when that someone happens to be Judy Garland. Such a document now exists to delight fans of Garland, Hollywood, and entertainment history: Scott Schechter's "Judy Garland: The Day-by-Day Chronicle of a Legend." Schechter is a leading authority and the man responsible for the many recent CD, DVD and video releases of Garland's performances. At 438 pages, Schechter's book is a demagogic, ambitious work, and at first glance appears overwhelming. But the end result is an entirely fascinating and absorbing record of a woman who was, by her own acknowledgment, born to perform. The author has done the amazing task of assembling tidbits of information - film production and recording data, dates, names and locations - in chronological fashion, organized by day, year and decade. Interspersed throughout are still and candid photographs (some reproduced full page) in black and white. The book also includes several appendices listing tribute materials published after Garland's 1969 death. A recommended music listening list and bibliography are also included. I must confess, I am not a Judy Garland fan. While I certainly enjoy her peerless work in THE WIZARD OF OZ and in other films such as MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS and ZIEGFELD GIRL, I never could relate to her off-screen persona, such that there was never the "personal" connection that many fans claim to experience. Probably the most important thing that Schechter's book does for the reader is to demystify Judy Garland, the human being. Reviewing Garland's life in a concrete, chronological format enables one objectively to put into perspective the subtle and overt influences that came to bear upon her intellectual, emotional and physical being, such that Judy Garland's life makes sense, leaving one with the understanding that it could not have played out any differently than it did. Such a balanced appreciation will prove especially invaluable to those who are just discovering Garland, or those who know her only as Dorothy. Longtime admirers will relish the wealth of meticulous detail and Schechter's editorial commentary and resources references that follow select entries. Oz aficionados will, in particular, enjoy the almost daily recounting of the WIZARD OF OZ film shoot, in addition to Garland's remarks about the film, made in later years." -- William Stillman, the BAUM BUGLE magazine "Do you practice Judyism? If so, you'll need the latest scripture. This authoritative text offers precious and obsessive information about the things our blessed mother and savior Judy did, said or attended. A lavishly illustrated, oversized Bible of a coffee-table book, it also includes appendices upon appendices of sacred text -- everything to a chronology of posthumous highlights. It may be preaching to the choir, but it makes a joyful noise. Praise Judy." -- UNZIPPED Magazine

THE HOLLYWOOD REPORTER -- Tuesday, November 16th, 2004 Reuters via Yahoo!

The author’s previous book "Judy Garland : The Day-By-Day Chronicle of a Legend” was acclaimed by the LA Times, Liz Smith, and the Hollywood Reporter which stated “It’s the most complete retrospective yet published on a celebrity ...
